Sunita Williams

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are set to return to Earth after an extended stay aboard the ISS. Their mission, which began on June 5, 2024, was originally planned for 8 days but was extended due to technical issues.

Mission Overview

Williams and Wilmore launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft as part of its first crewed test flight. The mission aimed to validate Starliner’s capabilities for future crewed flights.

Unexpected Delays

Starliner encountered several technical problems, including helium leaks and propulsion issues. NASA and Boeing decided to extend their stay at the ISS for safety reasons.

Return Plan

– Due to Starliner’s issues, NASA arranged for their return on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft. – This marks a significant shift, showcasing NASA’s operational flexibility.

Return Date & Capsule Details

The return is scheduled for March 19, 2025. Crew Dragon is a reliable spacecraft previously used for NASA’s Commercial Crew missions.

Landing Site & Procedures

 The capsule will land in the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico, where recovery teams will retrieve the astronauts.  NASA will conduct post-flight medical checks.

Health & Readjustment

Williams and Wilmore will undergo rehabilitation to readjust to Earth’s gravity. Physical therapy will help counteract the effects of long-term microgravity..
